Application and interview
The online application requires you to apply for a specific role on the Walmart career page. You must state your availability, complete your work history and qualifications, and verify you have the legal right to work. There is also an employment questionnaire.
Once your application is submitted and providing you pass one of the three pre-employment tests covered below, there follows an interview. Here are three typical questions you might expect:
- You’re told to work as quickly as possible. How do you ensure that the quality of your work isn’t affected?
- Describe a time you went above and beyond for a customer.
- What would you do if you saw a fellow employee steal money from the cash register?
Walmart Assessment Tests
The Walmart Assessment Test is an examination used by Walmart to measure candidates’ abilities. There are three main types of Walmart assessment, depending on the role you choose to apply for. These are Walmart Retail Associate Assessment (RAA), Walmart Teaming Employment Assessment (TEA), and Manager Employment Assessment (MEA).
Regardless of which assessment you do, you will likely be required to complete a series of aptitude tests including situational judgement tests, numerical reasoning, basic numeracy, and a personality test.
The Walmart Retail Associate Assessment (RAA) examines prospective employees on their ability to serve customers at its retail stores. It also assesses their ability to work within a team. You will certainly take this test if you are applying for hourly rate roles such as a cashier, personal shopper, or front-of-store worker.
For more senior roles such as leadership positions, you will be assessed using Walmart’s Teaming Employment Assessment (TEA), which is a pre-screening test when you first apply. For managerial roles, you might be asked to complete the Manager Employment Assessment (MEA).
The full application process typically consists of an initial application, pre-employment tests, interviews, and assessments. Navigating all of these might feel overwhelming, but the key is preparation and understanding what happens at each stage – and what you can do to thrive.
Walmart Retail Associate Assessment RAA
The RAA focuses on less senior roles, particularly for hourly rate jobs such as personal shopper or front-of-store worker. The test contains four key sections, which are a combination of personality, situational judgment, and numeracy assessments:

Work with Customers/Members and Associates. A situational judgement test involving everyday scenarios you might encounter on the shop floor at Walmart.

Handle Customer/Member Transactions. An interactive assessment that involves giving the correct change to a customer as quickly as possible. The less time you take on this the better, so make sure your math is sharp.

Tell Us Your Story. A questionnaire that contains generic questions about your background and work experience. These might seem simple but read the questions carefully, as they are used by Walmart to judge the kind of person and employee you are.

Describe Your Approach. A personality test based on Walmart’s values and its vision of the ideal employee for each role.

The Walmart Teaming Employment Assessment (TEA) consists of five main sections:

This test is designed for senior roles and is part of the initial pre-screening when you first apply to a managerial or senior leadership role.
Work With Associates
These are situational questions around teamwork and scenarios you might encounter in a leadership role, where you need to choose a response to each question. To perform well, you shouldn’t just rely on your previous experience; you need to use the information you are provided to make a judgment.
Once you choose an answer you cannot change it. Walmart also suggests you answer quickly and not stall on any question.
Manage Your Area
This test relates specifically to the area you have chosen to work in. You’ll be provided hypothetical information you must interpret, which aims to replicate the decision-making you might do in the real job.
Try to work quickly, since Walmart advises the less time it takes the better, which might imply taking too long on certain questions may affect your result.
Manage Your Day
Here you are provided scenarios that Walmart’s leaders face every day, and you will need to figure out how to prioritize them. For example, you’ll need to review certain activities, decide on their urgency and then make a decision on priorities.
Tell Us Your Story
This is a biodata questionnaire, which asks questions and details about a person’s life, education, and career. These questions help support diversity rules and also help as an additional screening method.
Attention to detail is key here (even if the answer seems obvious). Try to answer as quickly as possible.
Describe Your Approach
Describe your approach is a 30+ question personality test that evaluates your style of work and management. You might find the questions ask the same thing in different ways, which is why it’s important to stay consistent with your answers.
Manager Employment Assessment (MEA)
Similar to the TEA, the Walmart MEA consists of five sections:

The main difference is the Run Your Business section:
Run Your Business
This tests your ability to make managerial decisions based on business data, usually in the form of tables and charts. It will require some basic math to reach an answer.
More importantly, this test is not testing your math skills, but what to base your decisions on. The right calls will depend on Walmart’s own criteria.
Walmarts VR assessment
As well as using virtual reality (VR) to train its retail staff, Walmart has also been using VR technology to better assess candidates for higher-level positions, replacing written tests with virtual reality-based assessments.
You might be tested using a virtual simulation that examines your knowledge, instincts, and abilities. This allows Walmart recruiters to determine your ability to deal with everyday scenarios and task prioritization, and how you might handle unexpected events.
