  • Finance
  • Business Operations
  • Engineering
  • Supply Chain & Logistics
  • Technology
  • Marketing
  • & More

What Is Walmart’s Hiring Process?

Walmart’s hiring process is straightforward with three simple steps. Due to the high volume of candidates, the company structures each step of their interview process to be more difficult than the last. This allows them to narrow down the candidate pool considerably before they reach the final interviews.

Walmart’s interview process includes the following stages:

  • Application
  • Online Assessments
  • Interview

Read below to find out more about each stage.

Application

Walmart’s online application takes about forty-five to sixty minutes to complete. Some positions require a tailored CV and cover letter when applying. The application will also include questions that inquire about the interest in the company and the role. Typically, applicants will hear back from the company a week after they submitted an application, however, this is subject to change depending on the job and the location.

Walmart Online Assessments

Walmart requires that each candidate take at least one online assessment for any given position. Some may ask that candidates take more than one. The online assessments are sent via email to a candidate after the company has reviewed the application. In some cases, applicants are sent the assessments automatically and the scores are reviewed alongside the online application.

The online assessments provide Walmart with objective insight into the candidate’s aptitude and personality. Walmart uses the scores from these assessments to reduce the number of candidates before they begin interviewing them. The company has predetermined benchmarks for each position that must be met to be successful in this stage.

Applicants in this stage of Walmart’s hiring process may encounter one or more of the following assessments:

  • Walmart Assessment
The Walmart assessment is divided into four sections that examine the company’s most favored values. The first part is eight questions and scenario-based. It is focused on customer service and how the applicant would respond to tough situations. The second part is a personality survey containing thirty-three statements that must be rated on a scale from “Strongly Agree” to “Strongly Disagree”. Then, there is the problem-solving section with seven questions concerning how effective an action was in resolving a conflict. Finally, there is the work experience survey. This section has twelve questions that present a hypothetical, but common, workplace scenario and then asks how the applicant did or would respond in this situation. In total, the Walmart Assessment is sixty-four questions.
  • Situational Judgment Test (SJT)
The situational judgment test is administered to analyze how an applicant behaves in a workplace environment. The test will present a scenario followed by a response to the situation. The applicant’s job is to rate the effectiveness of the response and how likely they are to take that action themselves. The SJT is not timed and typically provides fifteen different scenarios to the candidate.
  • Leadership Test
The leadership tests are commonly for people applying to management positions within Walmart’s retail stores. The test is scenario-based with questions resembling those on the Walmart assessment and numerical reasoning test. The test specifically appraises ambition, emotional intelligence, and decision-making skills.
  • Numerical Reasoning Test
The numerical reasoning test is a timed assessment that evaluates mathematical abilities including algebra, statistics and probability, fractions, and more. These areas are assessed using tables and graphs that must be analyzed and interpreted. Following the given numerical figures will be two or more follow-up questions concerning the data. Walmart’s numerical reasoning test is typically seen in the interview processes for those applying to finance and analytics-related positions.
  • Verbal Reasoning Test
The verbal reasoning test assesses reading comprehension, grammar and, interpretation. Presented with a brief passage, the candidate must read and establish a connection between the paragraph and the subsequent set of statements. The answer choices are limited to “True”, “False”, and “Cannot Say”. The statements essentially test how well the candidate understood what they were reading and their ability to make accurate assumptions about arbitrary information.
  • Mechanical Reasoning Test
The mechanical reasoning test is a standard for maintenance, engineering, and industrial positions. The test essentially covers the principles of mechanics and how to apply them. There will be numerous images illustrating the different principles as well as various motions of gears, levers, and pulleys. The test is timed and multiple-choice.
  • Walmart Maintenance Technician Assessment
  • Walmart Supervisor Assessment

Walmart Interview

The interview is the final stage of Walmart’s hiring process. Questions during this stage are both competency-based and technical. Prior to the interview, do background research on the company and current industry trends and prepare a list of questions that you would like to ask them.

Some common questions for Walmart interview include:

  • Describe a time you went above and beyond for a customer.
  • Describe a time you and a teammate disagree on something.
  • How are your strengths an asset to the company?

How to Prepare for Walmart’s Online Assessments?

Walmart’s online assessments are a crucial part of the interview process. The tests carry a heavy weight in the hiring process, but many candidates fail to properly prepare.

Common methods of studying include sample questions and practice tests. Practice tests are favored because they more closely simulate Walmart’s assessments. The practice tests use time limits and similar questions and even provide you with your scores. Receiving your score allows you to estimate how well you will do on the genuine assessment and gives you an idea of how much more preparing you need to do.

The sample questions, on the other hand, allow you to focus on your problem-solving approach. This is beneficial if you find the content of the tests difficult. Some sample questions are accompanied by explanations of the answers which can help improve your own way of solving the question.

Whichever way you choose to prepare depends on what area of the test you feel you need to work on.

Interview Tips for Walmart

Walmart has a few key qualities they look for when interviewing candidates. These qualities are the subject of a variety of questions that aim to see how well the candidate aligns with them. Walmart’s favored values are:

  • Industry Knowledge
  • Detail-Oriented
  • Persistence

Before your interview, prepare examples of how you exhibit these traits and what they mean to you. Walmart also enjoys a candidate who has a few questions of their own to ask the interviewer. If you aren’t sure what to ask, here are a few helpful examples:

  • Are there any skillsets that your team is in need of?
  • How does this area of the company succeed, and is there any advice you can give me?
  • What is your favorite part of working here?

Keep these in mind for the end of the interview. Also, don’t underestimate the benefits of researching the company beforehand to demonstrate your interest and prove that you know your stuff. Best of luck!
