George W. Miller
George W. Miller, manager of the 101 ranch near Ponca City, died at hishome on the ranch at 2:30 o'clock on Saturday, April 25, 1903, ofpneumonia; aged 61 years and 20 days. Short funeral services were heldat the home on Sunday morning at 9 o'clock, conducted by Rev. Sims,Methodist missionary at Ponca Agency, and the body was shipped to CrabOrchard, Kentucky, the old home of the family, for burial. Mr. Millerleaves a wife and four children, two sons and two daughters, grown tomanhood and womanhood.
The officer of every immense corporation comes in for his share of theworld's fame, but there are unknown captains of industry in the Westwho are doing things in the world of work and finance that are equallyas worthy as the trust magnates. The management of a 50,000 acre farm, the largest under fence in the United States, is a fact that becomesappalling in its immensity when it comes to considering all the details.
George W. Miller a man over 60 years of age, had taken up the task ofrunning the famous 101 ranch in Northern Oklahoma. Indeed he hasbeen operating it quite successfully for the past four years, but underincreased pressure.
Mr. Miller paid the Ponca and Otoe tribes of Indians $32,500 annualrental for his 50,000 acre farm; other running expenses amounted to$75,000 annually. Last year 13,000 acres were sown in wheat, 3,000 incorn and 3,000 in forage crops.
The income of the ranch is from $400,000 to $500,000 annually. Theprofits on wheat are from $40,000 to $50,000 annually. The income onsteers is even more.
Two hundred men find employment on this vast ranch, and $33,000 worthof tools and machinery are used in caring for the grain harvest. Fourhundred head of mules are used in the field and in herding steers.
Mr. Miller has mastered economies of farming to such a degree ofperfection as to make the 101 ranch noted as the most profitablefarming property in the West. He had a system of double planting cornfield that gives double use of the land. By the time the corn had beenharvested the cow peas have grown high enough to make good pasturage. Also, after the cutting of the wheat in June and July the fields areplowed and sown in kafir corn. This is ready for the pasture inOctober, but the field is first drilled in wheat and the cattle areallowed to tramp in the wheat and nibble off the blades of corn. Duringthe winter, after the corn has been eaten away, the wheat crows up andis pastured until spring. This system of getting two returns from asingle field was an idea originated by Mr. Miller. It was his mostsuccessful plan of making money out of farming. (El Reno DailyAmerican, Tuesday, May 5, 1903, page 4)
