The Old Globe: ‘Fat Ham’ Winner of the 2022 Pulitzer Prize and a 2022 Tony nominee for Best New Play, James Ijames’ raucous comedy re-sets Shakespeare’s “Hamlet” at a contemporary Black family’s backyard barbecue in the American South. Queer, overweight and directionless, Juicy is confronted by his father’s ghost, who demands Juicy avenge his murder. “Hamlet” is a mere stepping-off point for this wildly funny play about love, family, identity and self-worth. StokerCon: The Horror Writers Association is hosting its annual convention for horror genre authors in San Diego this weekend. Fans can meet their favorite authors at a mass signing event featuring more than 100 authors Friday. There’s also a special day for librarians, Horror University workshops on writing, a short film competition and other events. A StokerConcert will take place Thursday night at The Casbah featuring Blackwater Holylight, Early Moods and Francis Roberts. Thursday through Sunday. Author signing from 5:15 to 6:30 p.m. Friday. San Diego County outdoor movies return: San Diego County’s series of more than 100 summer movie screenings in various parks continues this Friday with showings of “The Little Mermaid” at the Fallbrook Community Center and “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem” at Torrey Highlands Neighborhood Park. The movies start 15 minutes after sunset on each date. Attendees can bring their own blankets, beach chairs and picnics, and some locations may offer pre-movie activities. summermoviesinthepark.com

Project BLANK: ‘The Robots’ Always stretching boundaries, Project BLANK commissioned Los Angeles-based composer Carolyn Chen for this world premiere. The genre-bending chamber opera about a robot rebellion was inspired by a 1920s sci-fi play by Karel Čapek. Music director Kyle Adam Blair leads a strong cast of singers, including Leslie Ann Leytham, Jonathan Nussman, Mariana Flores Bucio and Miguel Zazueta, who all received plaudits for last year’s “No Exit.” 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday, 3 p.m. Sunday.
