Real-Life Love Couples of the 'Taxi' Cast: Flings, Marriages & More (2025)

Taxi is widely regarded as one of the greatest sitcoms thanks in large part to its charismatic cast. The workplace comedy, which followed the ups and downs of a group of cab drivers in New York City, helped make Danny DeVito into a star and gave Judd Hirsch, Christopher Lloyd and Marilu Henner some of their most beloved roles. The show also provided the trailblazing, legendarily bizarre comedian Andy Kaufman with one of his few mainstream parts.

Taxi ran from 1978 to 1983, and remains popular among multiple generations. The way the show highlighted the struggles of characters working unforgiving jobs and forging unlikely bonds still resonates, and the casting remains unparalleled. The chemistry of the cast was real: In a recent Woman’s World interview, Marilu Henner said that she saw her costars as family and still Zooms with them regularly.

Here’s a look back at the Taxi cast’s offscreen love lives—featuring flings between actors, creative partnerships, singlehood by choice, multiple marriages and much more.

Cast of ‘Taxi’: Where Are the Stars 45 Years After the Iconic Show Debuted?

Judd Hirsch

Judd Hirsch was married to Elisa Sadaune from 1963 to 1967. The couple had a son, Alex, who is now a musician. Hirsch then married Bonni Chalkin in 1992. Chalkin originally worked in the fashion industry and later became a writer and Reiki master. She co-wrote an episode of the short-lived sitcom George & Leo, which Hirsch starred in from 1997 to 1998. They had a daughter, Montana, and a son, London, and divorced in 2005.

Hirsch is currently married to actress Kathryn Danielle Hirsch. In 2023, the couple costarred in the play Love Letters for a one-night-only performance at Colorado’s Theatre Aspen. Originally, Hirsch’s fellow Taxi star Marilu Henner was supposed to play the female lead, but she had to drop out due to an illness. Hirsch’s wife previously acted alongside him in a benefit production of the play Talley’s Follly, and she also had a small part in Hirsch’s sitcom Superior Donuts in 2018.

When the cast change for their production of Love Letters was announced, Hirsch paid tribute to both his wife and his former costar, saying, “I’m so disappointed that my dearest friend Marilu is unable to travel to Aspen for Love Letters. Yet, I can think of no better person to join me on stage than my dearest real-life partner and wonderful actress, Kathryn Danielle Hirsch.”

Danny DeVito

Danny Devito met actress Rhea Perlman in 1971, when she saw a play the then-unknown star was acting in. The two quickly became an item and they married in 1982. DeVito and Perlman have shared the screen a number of times, and she appeared in several episodes of Taxi as his love interest. The couple also played the title character’s parents in the 1996 film Matilda, which DeVito directed.

DeVito and Perlman have two daughters, Lucy and Grace, and a son, Jacob. Both Lucy and Jacob have worked with their dad, the former as an actress and the latter as a producer, while Grace is an artist.

In 2012, DeVito and Perlman announced their separation, surprising fans who admired them as one of Hollywood’s longest-lasting couples. They reconciled the next year, only to separate again in 2017, but haven’t officially divorced.

DeVito and Perlman remain amicable and drama-free. In an interview this year, the actor said, “Rhea and I met in . . . 1970. We’ve been together for that long, and you grow together. It’s like you really know how each other’s feeling all the time. We participate in conversation daily. Lots and lots of talking and [doing] a lot of things together. We have three beautiful children, and now we have a granddaughter who is a year old, and we have one on the way. So the family’s growing.”

While acting on Taxi, Danza dated his costar, Marilu Henner, calling her his “first Hollywood girlfriend.”

She married her second husband, director Robert Lieberman, in 1990. They had two sons, Nick, who made his directorial debut with the 2023 movie Theater Camp, and Joey, an improv comedian and bridge player. Henner and Lieberman divorced in 2001.

Henner was struck by tragedy in 2023, when her two ex-husbands passed away within just eight days of one another.

Since 2006, Henner has been married to Michael Brown, a college friend who she reconnected with decades later. Shortly after beginning their relationship, Brown was diagnosed with cancer and Henner became his caretaker, saying, “In many ways, it intensified the relationship, and gave us both some clarity about how we felt about each other. Even just a couple months into being together, I thought: He is the love of my life, and I want to spend the rest of my life with him. I was feeling that from our first date, so that remained unchanged. The only thing that had to shift was taking on this additional role of caregiver, but the love that we had already made that easy.”

Brown is now cancer-free, and in 2017, he and Henner cowrote Changing Normal, a book about their experience of fighting the disease.

Andy Kaufman

Andy Kaufman was known for his strange and enigmatic presence which blurred the lines between fact and fiction, so he kept his personal life private. He had a daughter, Maria, with his high school girlfriend, but she was put up for adoption and didn’t discover Kaufman was her biological father until years after his untimely passing in 1984.

Kaufman dated fellow comedian Elayne Boosler. From 1982 until his death from lung cancer at just 35, he was in a relationship with Lynne Marguiles, who he met during the filming of his 1983 film My Breakfast with Blassie. Kaufman never married, and Marguiles went on to work on a number of projects related to his comedic legacy.

Carol Kane

Carol Kane dated Cheers star Woody Harrelson from 1986 to 1988. She never married or had kids, saying, “I made a decision. I have four-legged children—the best people in the world are doggies! I never had two-legged kids on purpose, because I never felt that I would be calm and stable enough to be the kind of mother I’d like to be. I don’t think everyone randomly is mother material.”

Conaway passed away in 2011 at age 60 following a battle with addiction and other health problems. In his final years, he had a relationship with musician and actress Vikki Lizzi, and the troubled pair appeared together in the reality show Celebrity Rehab With Dr. Drew in 2008.

Lloyd has been married to his current wife, Lisa Loiacono, since 2016. The couple met when Loiacono was working as a real estate agent and she was tasked with selling the house Lloyd shared with Wood.

While Lloyd has had many marriages, he’s never had children, and he only keeps in touch with Wood. When discussing his marriages in an interview, he said, “Five is the last,” and called Loiacono “my best fan.”
